Healthspan is different than Lifespan.
Let's look at The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition's definition of span:
noun
The extent or measure of space between two points or extremities, as of a bridge or roof; the breadth.
The distance between the tips of the wings of an airplane.
The section between two intermediate supports of a bridge.
Next, what is Health to you? what is Life to you?
I am thinking from the time we are born, we have been given a span and until we die, can we measure it? Most people want to live a life of health versus illness and disease.
In Functional Medicine, the provider and patient work together to figure out how to live a healthier (mind, body, soul) life so they can to enjoy their life.
Today, I read an email from Chuck Norris (Roadhouse Provisions). I like his Morning Kick supplement. Did you know he is 83 years old and healthy, fit as ever. But, did you know his Mama, Wilma Norris Knight, is 102 years young? He posted pictures of them both and they look AmaZing. He asked her what led to her longevity and she answered:1. Her healthy lifestyle 2. Her positive attitude 3. Her deep faith in God.
Well, I asked my grandmother Mattie Billing who lived to 101 years of age - What was her secret to her active, holistic lifestyle. Basically, the same response - God, Worship & Service to Him & Others. I'd say, she like her kids (my Dad) all had a Positive Attitude.
Regarding food - my grandmother would say people can eat all food groups in moderation. She cooked eggs in the morning, used butter and drank tea all day, weakened through out the day as she used 1 tea bag. I savored my time when visiting one on one in her home - I'd awaken to her audibly praying in the morning and when I would be laying silently going to sleep, I'd hear her praying at night.
Keep in mind - Centenarians are unique, rare.
The ones I've mentioned were born during a time that they were fed 'whole' foods and beverages.
We are living in different times of man made GMOs, toxic and or chemically laden processed foods, beverages.
If you want a Healthspan that is free of disease & full of vitality then there are health choices I/we need to make...
I highly recommend you do your own research and if you ask me, I'll gladly share what I am learning from experts I trust in the Holistic Health Field.
Lastly, I recommend you some Healthy Lifestyle choices:
Eat organic, local, whole foods. Consider filtrating your water and seeking to make distilled water.
Take time out for you in the mornings, evenings with sun rises, sun sets and time with God.
If taking supplements, consider asking 'what is the country of origin?'
Spend more time in nature and less time with any EMF.
In the midst of the storms of life - keep your chin up, smile inwardly & say to self - I can do this moment, this day & keep moving forward one step at a time!
